Pay Per Click Marketing - Keyword Research Secrets You Must Know

Advertising on the Pay Per Click Search Engines, such as Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and MSN, has become so much more competitive in the last few years that each step of the process must be done correctly to be profitable.

And the first step in any Pay Per Click Marketing campaign must be thorough keyword research.

If you don't have at least 500 - 1,000 highly targeted keywords in your campaign, you're probably leaving a lot of valuable traffic on the table! And your most valuable keywords are probably NOT the 10 to 20 major keywords that are the obvious ones for your product or service - since these are also most likely the most costly (and often the least used by searchers who are ready to buy now).

As you probably know, there are many keyword research tools available today - some of the most popular being Google's own tools (free), WordTracker, and NicheBot.

Regardless of which you choose, doing "lateral" keyword research is an absolute must. This means finding alternate ways of looking for the same thing - using totally different words. All three tools mentioned above have that ability (but of course you need to know how to properly use the tools to get at these lateral keywords).

But one of the ways of developing a great starting point for your keyword list, which will also get you to an excellent list of lateral keywords, is to look at the keywords your best competitors are using for their pay per click marketing campaigns. A really great tool for doing this is KeywordSpy. This tool allows you to find out all the keywords used for any domain name - including a landing page used in an adwords ad!

Since you know these competitors are advertising day in and day out, and you know all their keywords, this gives you what you need to beat them, every time.

How?

By starting with their list of keywords, and then tracking results down to the keyword level to see which really produce conversions for the product or service.

Then simply eliminate the ones that don't produce sales, or have a negative return on investment, and you've got them beat!

How do you track your advertising down to the keyword level? See our site for that answer, below!
